TAKING SOIL SAMPLES FOR MOISTURE DETERMINATION:
- Take samples at the wettest locations
- heavier soil texture
- low spots.
- Sample at 1 foot increments to five feet.
- Highest soil moisture found should determine rate to be used.
These instructions for sampling soils to determine the moisture level were developed for use in nursery programs. Because finer textured soils tend to hold water longer, and water tends to collect in low spots, they are likely to be the wettest areas of a field. In many instances, fumigants have the potential to penetrate soil to five feet or even more if soil moisture is not limiting and this should be considered when selecting a rate to utilize.
